The unique and easily-overlooked African broadbill is a tough bird to find due to its secretive habits and preference for dense forest mid-stratum. Typically a bird of sand forest or Riparian forest, African broadbill also occur in the dune forest close to St Lucia (albeit at a lower density).
During November and December the amazing display of the male helps to locate these birds. The male puffs out his white back feathers, and does a ‘whirring loop’- making a terrific and far-carrying ‘prrrrrrrrp’ sound before returning to the same perch again. This display is a jaw-dropping spectacle to witness.
