These powerful birds of prey can be found in forested habitat around St Lucia and the Isimangaliso Wetlands Park.
Their large size and power enables them to take large prey up to the size of sub-adult bushbuck. Otherwise both Vervet monkey and Samango monkey and red duiker are both on the menu too.
Pairs of African crowned eagle form permanent bonds and uitilize the same nest for consecutive breeding attempts.
They can often be seen soaring close to the nesting site whilst giving their territial advertisement call.
Interestingly, in Isimangaliso they often hunt during termite emergences when monkeys are distracted by the rich buffet.
