Birds of St Lucia: African pygmy-goose

African pygmy-goose and White-backed duck in wetlandAfrican pygmy-goose and White-backed duck co-occur in waterlily-covered wetlands close to St Lucia.
These beautiful, tiny geese are denizens of water lily-covered wetlands around St Lucia. Their occurrence in the area is dependent on rainfall. They can be extremely common in wet years and absent in times of drought.

They occur in pairs where they can be seen feeding on waterlilies.

They are synonymous with White-backed duck which often occur on the same pans due to their preference for the same habitat.
