Birds of St Lucia: Purple-banded sunbird

Purple-banded sunbird Acacia treePurple-banded sunbird can often be seen calling in the vicinity of Acacia trees. Their favoured nesting tree.
Purple-banded sunbird are most easily seen in late winter when they are attracted to flowering coral trees, Cape honeysuckle and Weeping boer-bean trees in St Lucia.

Males are extremely vocal in Spring at the onset of breeding season and call regularly from a prominent perch.

Pairs often build their nest composed of lichen, moss and spiderwebs on the spindly low hanging branches of Dune thorn acacia trees.
